World Deaf Day (WDD) is celebrated across the world on 28th Sept. of every year. Yuva Association of the Deaf, Mumbai, organized a gathering in Shivaji Park, Dadar, on 30th Sept., 2018 (nearest Sunday to 28th Sept., 2018) to celebrate WDD. More the 500 Deaf and Hearing people joined the gathering to show their support to the Deaf Community.
The aim of the program was two fold - to let the Deaf people enjoy this special day and to spread awareness about the ways, culture, accessibility, language (sign language) and needs of the Deaf Community of India, among hearing people and the government.
We hope that the event will act as a small drop in the ocean of the Deaf struggle to achieve their rights and live a life of dignity.
Points presented in the WDD - promotion and reflection of CRPD to show that sign languages as fully-fledged languages, need of early intervention programs, promotion of Deaf Community as a linguistic minority instead of a disabled Community, reaching out to the government for promotion of sign language in India
